FIBA Europe officially announced today the EuroLeague Women All Star Game 2006, a new date in the European basketball calendar.
The All Star Game will take place on 8th March, 2006 and will be hosted by Hungarian EuroLeague Women club MiZo Pécs.
The game will feature 24 players selected from the 18 clubs participating in the 2005/2006 EuroLeague Women. The format of the game will be Europe vs. Rest of the World and 20 players will be selected via a fan poll on fibaeurope.com, while the remaining 4 players will be chosen by FIBA Europe.
The EuroLeague Women All Star Day 2006 will mark the beginning of the Year of Women’s Basketball, a sustained 18 month project aimed at promoting women’s basketball around Europe which will culminate at EuroBasket Women 2007 in Italy.
“8th March is International Women’s Day and as such is the ideal date to launch not only the EuroLeague Women All Star Game, but the Year of Women’s Basketball,” said FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin.
“FIBA Europe has been committed to the development of women’s basketball for a number of years, but this project is something new which we hope will provide a real boost in the promotion of women’s sport.
“We think that Pecs is the perfect place to host the All-Star game and we are very excited to have the best women’s players in Europe altogether for such an occasion. It’s going to be a great event.”
“It is a great honour for us to be appointed by FIBA Europe to organize the EuroLeague Women All Star Game 2006. We are very happy that Pécs have got this possibility, a city where basketball is loved so much” said Gábor Rózsa, representative of MiZo Pécs.
