GAME REPORT

Greece Relegated As Portugal Survive

9. Mariana Silva (Portugal)
Mariana Silva played an important role for Portugal when it counted most

Greece's offensive woes returned to haunt them as a dismal third quarter led to a 53-38 win and survival in U16 European Championship Women Division A for Portugal.

Turning Point: Portugal held a 10-point half-time lead after surging ahead with six unanswered points at the end of the first quarter. But it became a full-blown crisis for Greece when, after Evgenia Kollatou's three-pointer early in the second half, they missed their next 12 shots and turned the ball over five times as Portugal ran away with the match on a 16-1 run. The Greek team scrapped furiously with their Division A status on the line, bringing the deficit down to 11 in the final three minutes, but it was too little, too late for Greece, who complete a miserable summer with all three age groups going down to their respective Division B's for 2015.

Game Heroes: Mariana Silva has finished the tournament strongly for Ana Neves' squad, notching a double-double here with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Beatriz Jordao was immense on the glass, hauling in 18 rebounds and adding 12 points for a double-double of her own. Maria Nunes had four points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Kollatou's team-high 14 points proved to be futile as Greece slipped to defeat.

Stats Don't Lie: Greece only shot 21% from the field, and Portugal grabbed almost twice as many rebounds to ensure that Greece couldn't make an impact on the game. 33 of Greece's 56 shots came from behind the arc, while Portugal preferred to do their work inside, scoring 34 points in the paint compared to only six for Greece.

The Bottom Line: Portugal's maiden campaign in Division A will be followed by a second stint in 2015. Greece will look to immediately bounce back from Division B.
