|Digna Strautmane led the Latvian scoring with a game-high 20 points|
Both teams struggled offensively, but Latvia were able to make enough shots count to take a 51-26 win and claim second place over Turkey in Group B of the U16 European Championship Women.
Turkey's top-scorer in the tournament so far, Selale Kepenc, hit a free throw to cut the Latvian lead to six at the end of the first quarter.
But Turkey were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the second quarter, a barren spell which finally ended with Melisa Korkmaz's three-pointer.
They went to score the next five points in the game too, but Latvia dominated thereafter, forcing turnovers and moving the ball well on offense.
Sisters Paula and Digna Strautmane were too strong inside for the Turkish team. Paula ended with a near triple-double (16 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists) and 14-year-old Digna top-scored with 20 points, adding nine rebounds.
Kepenc led Turkey with 13 points. Both teams now look forward to the second round, starting on Monday.
