Slovenia To Host Second Annual Girls Camp

03.07.2008

Postojna is preparing to host the International Camp for U15 Girls for the second time.

Following the success of the camp in 2007, FIBA Europe's Development Department, in co-operation with the Slovenian Basketball Federation is organising a bigger and better event this summer.

The players, identified by experts in their own country as the most talented in their age group, will have the opportunity to train and learn from some of the top experts in women's basketball. The camp programme will include basketball and fitness testing, skill training, various competitions and social events.

In addition to the programme for players, FIBA Europe is also organising Coaching and Refereeing clinics. 56 coaches from 30 countries will hear lectures from experts such as Janez Drvaric (Slovenia), Laszlo Ratgeber (Hungary), Fabio Fossati (Italy) and Juan Manuel Ruiz Orihuella (Spain). All coaches will also work on court, side by side, and share experiences and ideas.

The 24 young referees, all female, will enjoy a comprehensive programme consisting of theory sessions on basketball rules and mechanics, fitness training and game officiating. The refereeing clinic will be lead by FIBA Europe's instructor Tomislav Jovancic and the FIBA referee Roman Kolar.

Radmila Turner, FIBA Europe Women's co-ordinator commented that the development of all aspects of the women's game are equally important:

"We are striving to provide quality programmes with the aim to improve and develop further the women's game in Europe. By focusing not only on the players but also on the coaches and referees, we believe that more girls will see basketball as their future career."

Nar Zanolin, the Secretary General of FIBA Europe is also very supportive of the event:

"We at FIBA Europe are committed to all development initiatives and projects aimed to support the national federations in their growth. We are running the strongest women's basketball league in the world and at the same time are organising youth events for three youth age groups, male and female, every summer. I would like to sincerely thank the Slovenian Basketball Federation for working with us on this exciting project."

Iztok Rems, the Secretary General of the Slovenian Federation is equally excited to be involved:

"I would like to thank FIBA Europe for entrusting the organisation of the 2nd International basketball camp for girls to our federation. We are very proud to be co-creators of this magnificent sporting event uniting young players, coaches and referees from all over Europe."
