SAPORTA CUP HISTORY

The European Cup Winner's Cup

There proved to be overwhelming demand from Europe's clubs for FIBA to organise a second competition following the success of the European Cup for Men's Champion Clubs in 1958.

FIBA was initally reluctant as it represented the national federations rather than the individual clubs. However the clubs got their wish in in 1966, when FIBA created the European Cup Winner's Cup.

The competition changed its name to the European Cup in 1992 and again in 1996 when it became the Saporta Cup, in honour of one of the pionerrs of European club competition, Raimundo Saporta.
