| 27 July 2007 Alexandra Tarasova and Viktoria Medvedeva combined for 52 points as Russia over-powered Ukraine 82-68 in the first day of action in Group D of the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women.
Russia used a 17-4 run between the third and fourth quarters to open a 72-55 lead with 6:45 to play, deciding the game.
Tarasova led all scorers with 28 points and added 11 rebounds and three blocked shots while Medvedeva chipped in 24 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Ukraine also had two outstanding performances as Ol'Ha Maznichenko tallied 23 points, seven rebounds and two steals, and Olesya Malashenko collected 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals. But it was not enough with the rest of the team making just 20 percent (4-of-20) of their shots.
In the group's second game, France dominated Greece 74-48 with Allison Vernerey hitting for 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
After falling behind 10-1 in the first quarter, Greece fought back to within 15-13. But a 9-0 France run led to a 41-23 half-time lead.
And the French advantage never dropped below 15 points in the second half and grew to 27 late in the game.
Priscilla Lokoka added 11 rebounds as France out-rebounded the Greeks 62-23. Rafaela Soultani led Greece with 18 points on six three-points. But little else worked offensively for the Greeks, who shot just 22 percent (13-of-59) in the contest.
On Saturday, Ukraine look for their first victory of the tournament against Greece while Russia hope to remain perfect against France. |
