|Svetislav Pesic is highly motivated to help Bayern achieve their ambitious goals|
Svetislav Pesic has been announced as the new head coach of FC Bayern Munich, the club announced in a press conference on Tuesday.
Pesic is taking over from Yannis Christopoulos, who was handed the reins at the beginning of the season.
After a mediocre 5-5 start to the BEKO BBL season, including a recent 73-78 loss at home to Braunschweig, the club had a decision to make, club president Uli Hoeneß told the gathered media.
"The situation we're in is not very satisfying.
"We had a long conversation with Marko [Pesic] and Svetislav [Pesic] and we're happy that Svetislav has said yes to coaching the team until the end of the season," Hoeneß said.
"Svetislav is a very experienced coach who can handle the individual characters and implement his style fast.
"He already knows a lot of the players, since he coached them in the national team."
Pesic guided Germany to a perfect 8-0 record in the EuroBasket 2013 Qualification Round.
Pesic will also be reunited with his son Marko, who is the sports director of the club.
"I am happy to be a part of one the world's biggest clubs," Pesic stated.
"I felt that my career as a club coach was not finished yet, and I am now fully focused on Bayern Munich.
"I was glad to have helped Germany qualify for EuroBasket 2013, but after the qualifiers I had to make a decision for myself."
The German Basketball Federation accepted Pesic's decision, and wished him luck for his new assignment.
"I spoke to President [Ingo] Weiss and Secretary General [Wolfgang] Brenscheidt, and they are both happy that I will at least be coaching in Germany.
"I will continue helping German basketball in the best possible way," Pesic concluded.
In an official statement, the Federation is remaining optimistic about finding a worthy successor.
"We are happy for FC Bayern that they got such a top coach. This is positive for German basketball.
"The German Basketball Federation is well prepared for the new situation, and will work intensely to soon present a new national team coach."
Pesic had previously coached the German national team from 1987 to 1993, leading the team to the gold medal at the European Championship in 1993, and was back at the helm last summer.
