FIBA Europe President Meets Patriarch Alexei

The president of FIBA Europe George Vassilakopoulos met with Patriarch Alexei II, the current Patriarch of Moscow and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, during his recent visit to the Russian capital.

During the hour-long meeting the two men discussed a variety of subjects, among others the role of sport in modern society.

Mr Vassilakopoulos was in Moscow for meetings with Russian sports dignitaries and the Russian Basketball Federation.

Alexei was elected to the Moscow Patriarchal Throne at the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church after the death of Patriarch Pimen on 7 June 1990. The enthronement was held on 10 June 1990.
