03 August 2008

FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos received a special honour on Saturday when it was announced that the Municipal Gym of Pyrgos was renamed after him.

The unveiling by the Mayor of Pyrgos, Makis Paraskevopoulos took place before Greece's semi-final game against Croatia, at the U18 European Championship, a tournament which eventually the Greek hosts went on to win.

"This is the least we can do for a man who has loved and honoured us," commented Paraskevopoulos.

"It is always a special feeling for me when my own people honour me. I would like to thank the Mayor and through him all the citizens of Pyrgos" said Vassilakopoulos.

The Municipal Gym of Pyrgos which was inaugurated by Vassilakopoulos when he was Greece's Undersecretary for Sport in 1995, will be now known as Municipal Gym "Giorgos Vassilakopoulos."

The decision to rename the town's gym was taken by the Pyrgos Municipality.
