Rubio Receives Young Player Of The Year Award

Ricky Rubio was presented with the award for the 2007 FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year on Thursday before the tip-off of the friendly game in Madrid, between World champions Spain and the defending Olympic champions of Argentina.

The DKV Joventut player, who won the award in a combined public and expert vote at the turn of the year,

Rubio has been the heart of many a Spanish youth team over the last few years.
is currently playing for the Spanish national team which is preparing for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Rubio led Spain to a fifth place finish at the U18 European Championship Men in August last year, where he averaged 19.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest while shooting nearly 50% from behind the three-point line.

The 18-year-old played a bigger part for club side DKV Joventut with whom he won the ULEB Cup this spring.

The award was presented by FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin.

"Ricky Rubio has shown what kind of player he is ever since he burst on the scene at the U16 level.  He is truly a special player with the potential to accomplish a lot, both on the European and the world stage." Said Zanolin.

Spain won the game 90-88.
