|Domen Lorbek finished the game with a tied team-high 16 points|
TURNING POINT: Gaziantep kicked off proceedings in overtime by drilling three consecutive triples, as Ernest Bremer, Murat Göktas and Can Ogut all hit big shots from beyond the arc. The Turkish team hardly missed a shot in the extra period and outscored Szolnok 19-7 to step on the podium.
GAME HERO: The stat lines of both Dejan Borovnjak and Domen Lorbek reflect their enormous contribution, but Ernest Bremer played a key role on both ends of the floor in Gaziantep's third-quarter comeback and made crucial baskets down the stretch.
STATS DON'T LIE: Gaziantep not only cancelled out Szolnok's supremacy on the glass and conceeded only nine second-chance points to the Hungarians, but ended up out-rebounding their opponents 40-37.
Royal Hali Gaziantep knocked down Szolnoki Olaj 87-75 in a EuroChallege third-place game that went into overtime on Sunday in Bologna, to conclude their maiden European campaign on the podium.
Szolnok started off better in the clash for third place at PalaDozza arena, with Marton Bader receiving the ball in his zone of action close the Gaziantep basket and collecting 12 early points on 5-of-5 from the floor.
With 2:21 remaining to the end of the first half, David Vojvoda intercepted a bad pass by Dejan Borovnjak and darted down the court, drawing a foul as he finished at the rim, and converted the and-one play to give Szolnok an 11-point lead, their biggest all night, 36-25.
In the last minute before the half-time buzzer, Domen Lorbek sunk a triple from the corner and Oliver Stevic made a mid-range jumper to reduce the gap to 36-32.
Still though, Szolnok seemed to be in control and Gaziantep coach Jure Zdovc had to make adjustments in the locker room.
"I told my players to play stronger, faster, to show character," the Slovenian coach said.
"When the second half started, we defended the pick'n'roll better and started passing the ball in the low post on offence."
The approach produced results almost instantly, as Gaziantep used a 16-4 burst midway through the third quarter to turn the tables around and jump ahead 54-46 with 2:15 remaining in the period, on five consecutive points from Ernest Bremer.
All four of Szolnok's points during that five-minute stretch came from the foul line.
When Sertac Sanli power-dunked his way to Szolnok's basket and extended the lead to 64-53 with 6:24 left to play in the fourth frame, Gaziantep's task of total recall appeared to have been accomplished.
Szolnok however had not said their last word and Peter Lorant with a tough lay-up in traffic 25 seconds from the end of regulation, capped off an improbable 15-4 run that saw them tie the scores at 68.
Gaziantep turned the ball over on their last possession in regulation and with about a second on the clock, Lorant attempted a desperation triple from half-court.
When the ball bounced off the glass, Vojvoda was already there to tip it in but the video replay showed he had just missed the buzzer and the basket was ruled out.
That sequence signalled Szolnok's final demise, as Gaziantep commenced overtime in infallible fashion from the three-point arc and left the Hungarians with a mountain to climb.
Borovnjak and Lorbek both finished with 16 points for the winners, Bremer collected 15 points, while Can Ogut went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in overtime and collected 11 points.
For Szolnok, Bader finished with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds in a losing effort.
Royal Hali Gaziantep Head Coach Jure Zdovc
"Maybe we did not play the smartest game, but we were strong today because it was very important for us to return home with a win. We have a tough schedule now in Turkey and this win is very important for our morale. We had a very good, physical opponent who came up with tricks and we needed some time to adjust. When we started to play tougher, we reached them and took an advantage. We made some stupid decisions at the end and allowed them to take the game to overtime but we made some great shots, or maybe lucky shots, I don't know what to say really, in overtime."
Royal Hali Gaziantep Player Can Ogut
"We were sad about losing the game on Friday and we wanted to bring something back to Turkey. It was hard to focus on this game but we managed to hassle for loose balls and play defence. We are happy to win and take third place."
