Caught fire in the final seconds of the game: Zsófia Fegyverneky
UE Sopron staged a late comeback to beat BK IMOS Brno 73-67 in their EuroLeague Women Group B opener on Wednesday.
Sopron were looking for their first home win in over a year and did it the hard way, as they trailed for much of the game before Zsófia Fegyverneky caught fire to score the final seven points.
Sopron went in front for the first time since the third minute when Zsófia Simon hit a three-pointer to make it 64-63 with four minutes to play.
But Alena Hanusová twice restored the visitors' lead before Fegyverneky finished on an ‘and-one' to convert the first three of her closing seven points to snatch victory.
Brno had led by as many as 16 points at the end of the first quarter after an ‘and-one' from Danielle Hamilton sparked an 8-0 spurt.
That advantage was still 40-28 at the half despite the back-to-back baskets from Fegyverneky.
New coach Igor Polanek got into his Sopron team at half-time however and they made a strong start in the third period puling back to 49-43 and seizing the initiative that would lead to their late heroics.
Hanusová led all scorers with 27 in a losing effort while Fegyverneky had 25 including those crucial last seven.
