Parker Lights It Up For UMMC In Prague

Diana Taurasi (UMMC Ekaterinburg)
Diana Taurasi led scoring for UMMC Ekaterinburg with 23 points

Candace Parker showed she is back to full fitness after a classy double-double carried UMMC Ekaterinburg to a hard fought EuroLeague Women Group A 78-71 triumph at ZVVZ USK Prague.

The forward and former EuroLeague Women MVP accrued 22 points from an excellent floor shooting display and also pulled down 11 boards, as the visitors came back from a double-digit deficit to take victory.

It had looked as if ZVVZ USK Prague were about to make a serious opening night statement when they surged ahead in the second quarter as a score by Ilona Burgrova made it 39-26 to the home side.

UMMC had to rally and Diana Taurasi helped them cut the gap to five points at the interval, but a terrific ‘and-1' play by the exciting Alena Hanusova had Prague back in the ascendency at 57-46.

It stunned the Russian powerhouse, but they responded with 14 of the next 16 points as they wrestled the initiative away and moved 60-59 ahead.

It set up a highly entertaining finish, but it was Parker and the 23-point Taurasi who made the plays in crunch time to get UMMC the win.

Laia Palau had a double-double for Prague with 11 points and 10 assists, while Sonja Petrovic scored 19 points on her debut with the Czech side.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: ZVVZ USK Prague vs. UMMC Ekaterinburg

Olaf Lange, UMMC Ekaterinburg Head Coach
"Big compliments to USK, with missing so many crucial players they played really smartly and effectively. Somehow we managed to win the game even though we did not play as well; it was a nice performance from their side. The zone defence finally helped us to stop the home players and score some difficult points. It is always very difficult to win in Prague; therefore I am very happy for the win not for the performance."

Candace Parker, UMMC Ekaterinburg
"USK had a really good beginning. Sonja [Petrovic] had an amazing first quarter and it was hard to overcome the zone defence. But we learned from our mistakes and in the final quarter we were able to do our best at that moment which worked."

Natalia Hejkova, ZVVZ USK Prague Head Coach
"Our group is very difficult and every lost game is doubly sad. Now we are very disappointed because we were very close to the win and against Ekaterinburg we need to use those chances. In the end we were just missing the power and we did not score from long distance. I believe that with having Kia [Vaughn] and Danielle [Robinson] on the court we would have won the game. Danielle would have caused them troubles in setting the zone defence and Kia would have helped us underneath the basket."

Sonja Petrovic, ZVVZ USK Prague
"We played a really good game, but now we are sad because we lost. They had all the starts while we were missing some important players. It was a good test for us to see where we are now and what our abilities are. I believe that once we have the complete team we will be able to reach our goals."
