GAME REPORT

Ayayi Takes Down Reigning Champions

11. Valeriane Ayayi (France)
Valeriane Ayayi impressed in her first EuroLeague Women game, recording a 30-point, 12-rebound double-double

A magnificent display by Valeriane Ayayi handed Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration a 66-59 overtime win in Istanbul against EuroLeague Women reigning champions, Galatasaray odeabank.

The French wing layer was on fire and recorded a stellar 30 points and also claimed 12 rebounds, to give her team a brilliant opening night boost.

In stark contrast, the home side were unable to tip-off the defence of their coveted title on a positive note as they laboured without the considerable experience of frontcourt duo Sancho Lyttle and Nevriye Yilmaz, who were both unavailable.

Not that this diminished the accomplishment of BLMA, who having blown a big lead, could easily have crumbled in the extra period, but held firm and hit back.

Leading 43-29 late in the third quarter, Montpellier watched in dismay as their hard earned advantage slowly evaporated as Kelsey Bone brought Galatasaray level with two minutes left.

Anael Lardy and Queralt Casas both exchanged triples and Mistie Bass had a chance to win it in regulation for the French side, but couldn't convert.

She did however do the business in overtime with a couple of big scores inside as Galatasaray opted to mainly try and score from long-range - a strategy that didn't pay off.

Bone had an excellent 21 points for the losing side.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Galatasaray vs. BLMA

Derya Özyer, Galatasaray Assistant Coach
"It was a bad night for us. Frankly, we couldn't do anything that we wanted to in any part of this game. We were lacking energy. We made some effort at the end but it wasn't enough. It was a very bad game for us."

Ayşegül Günay, Galatasaray
"We are sorry for the loss. We have some missing players, after they join I think we would play better. It's a bad start for us, but I think we can make it up later."

Valery Demory, BLMA Head Coach
"I'm happy for this win. We used zone defence for the whole game and we were able to stop Galatasaray's offence. We dominated rebounds and that helped us win."

Valeriane Ayayi, BLMA
"We were very good on defence tonight. We were better at rebounds. We were able to produce enough on offence so that we could keep our confidince high. I am happy that we won."
