Roundup: Wisla Rout Rivals, Schio Slump

11 November 2013

Wisla Can-Pack post a scintillating win against arch rivals and defending Polish champions CCC Polkowice, whilst Famila Schio are brought back down to earth in the Italian League.

22. Alexandria Quigley (Wisla Can-Pack)
Alexandria Quigley and Wisla Can-Pack slumped to defeat in EuroLeague Women but made a statement at home in Poland

The two big Polish heavyweights suffered a couple of agonising home losses in their EuroLeague Women curtain-raisers last week and down to meet each other over the weekend, one club was guaranteed to suffer double disappointment.

And, it were CCC Polkowice who endured that particular fate after they were dismantled 70-53 by their main challengers, who look determined to wrestle back some of their titles this season.

Wisla Can-Pack were rampant inside as Jantel Lavender and Justyna Zurowska shared 38 points and 15 rebounds.

After the huge high of their outstanding road win at Tango Bourges in EuroLeague Women last week, Beretta Famila Schio were cut down to size on their return to Italian League action.

They picked up a first loss of the season which was an even bigger shock since the 67-63 reverse came at the hands of newcomers Carispezia Virtus La Spezia, with 16 points from Jolene Anderson not enough to save the champions.

6. Sonja Petrovic (Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje)
Sonja Petrovic led a young Sparta&K squad to victory against fellow EuroLeague Women side Nadezhda

They may have a young team lacking in experience compared to previous seasons, but Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje sent a message out to their rivals over the weekend with a thunderous 89-59 home win against beleaguered Nadezhda Orenburg.

The visitors came into the game off the back of their disappointing EuroLeague Women loss to Lattes Montpellier and their mood was worsened as Sonja Petrovic claimed 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a sparkling display for the winning team, whilst Slovenian playmaker Nika Baric was just one assist short of a fine double-double.

Dynamo Moscow cruised past Dynamo Novosibirsk 84-65 on the road as Kristi Toliver and Ana Dabovic scored 14 points each and there was a first Premier League success for Bo Overton.

The recently installed Dynamo Kursk play-caller watched his team take down Enisey Krasnoyarsk 80-65, thanks to 17 points from Epiphanny Prince and an excellent 14 points and nine assists from Shay Doron.

UMMC Ekaterinburg are still unbeaten after fine efforts by Sandrine Gruda and Sue Bird took them to a comfortable 75-53 win at Energia Ivanovo.

EuroLeague Women clubs Kayseri Kaski spor and Galatasaray odeabank are both still locked at the top of the TKBL table after extending their unbeaten records to six games.

Both teams had to squeeze out precious road victories, with Kayseri firstly escaping from Konak Belediyesi with a 60-57 win after a decisive basket by Aysegul Gunay in the closing seconds and a handy 23 points from Tanisha Wright.

Galatasaray dodged a bullet with a 61-58 win at title rivals and EuroCup Women frontrunners Istanbul Universitesi as Nevriye Yilmaz harvested 14 points and 10 rebounds. The visitors posted a strong finish to get over the line as Crystal Langhorne and Gabriela Marginean added a combined 31 points for the losing team.

A powerful last quarter was also enough for Fenerbahce to see off Canik Belediye 64-54, as Angel McCoughtry contributed 19 points.

Meanwhile Greek guard Evanthia Maltsi was back on song with 16 points and nine assists for Homend Antkya in an 85-78 win over Orduspor and Adana Botas waltzed past Besiktas 70-51 off the back of 27 points from Spanish guard Sandra Igueravide.

Elsewhere, Tarsus Belediye are in big trouble after picking up a fifth defeat in their first six games with a 91-84 loss at Mersin Buyuksehir Bld as Matee Ajavon and Ane Lelas scored 54 points with the former racking up 33 of those.

7. Endene Miyem (Bourges Basket)
The team to beat in France: Endene Miyem and Bourges Basket

There were first tastes of victory and defeat for Angers and Villeneuve d'Ascq in the French League over the weekend, with the former finally getting off the mark at the seventh attempt with a 67-64 success against Tarbes.

Croatian national team player Iva Sliskovic added 15 points and seven rebounds in the win which was headlined by Canadian Lizanne Murphy, who had a super 23 points and eight rebounds.

If there is such a thing as losing in style and to snap a six game winning streak, then Villeneuve certainly delivered after being blown out 76-58 on their home court against fellow title chasers Lyon.

It leaves Tango Bourges as outright leaders and still unbeaten after they shrugged off their EuroLeague Women opening night disappointment to crush struggling Hainaut Basket 83-39 thanks to 17 points from Cathy Joens, 16 points and nine rebounds from Endene Miyem and a big line from Celine Dumerc who had 12 points, nine assists and seven boards.

Basket Landes and Lattes Montpellier are also still in the thick of the early Championship race after wins against Toulouse and Nantes Reze respectively.

Nantes are struggling badly after crashing to a sixth loss in seven games.
