FIBA Europe Champions Cup to be played in Thessaloniki, Greece

16 April 2003

FIBA Europe announced this morning that the Final Four of the Champions Cup will take place in Thessaloniki. The Greek bid was successful over competitors from Serbia and Montenegro, France, Poland and Russia.

"We're very excited about the Final Four of the Champions Cup," said FIBA Europe Executive Director Nar Zanolin. "Thessalonki is one of Europe's basketball hotspots and I have no doubt that the competition will be of the highest quality."

The Champions Cup quarter-final play-offs finished on Tuesday evening. All 8 games were fiercely fought affairs, which contained their fair share of surprises. "I think the play-offs have been a clear example of the quality of teams in the Champions Cup," commented FIBA Europe Sports Director Kosta Iliev. "Unics Kazan were seeded number 1 in the play-offs and have just came off a Russian Cup final victory over CSKA Moscow. Yet they were defeated by BC Ventspils, who were ranked number 8. Aris Thessaloniki were seeded 6th and they still produced a win over Academic Sofia who were seeded 3rd. I'm sure that we will see some great games at the final four, because each of the qualified teams deserves to be there and all have a legitimate shot at the title."

The FIBA Europe Champions Cup Final Four will take place on 2-4 May, 2003 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The semi-final pairings are as follows:

BC Ventspils v. Prokom Trefl Sopot
KK Hemofarm Vrsac v. Aris BSA Thessaloniki

Information with regards to tickets and media accreditation will be available on as soon as they are finalised.
