General Assemblies of FIBA Europe League and FIBA EuroLeague Women meet in Munich

The General Assembly of the FIBA Europe League met today in Munich, Germany, prior to the Draw, which will be held tomorrow, Saturday 19th July 2003 at 10:00.

All 32 clubs competing in the competition attended the meeting and unanimously agreed to the following decisions.

  • The marketing of the FIBA Europe League was examined closely with the co-operation of all participating clubs. The clubs were informed that contact with several potential sponsors has already been made. Everyone agreed that these negotiations continue and contracts signed.
  • The clubs decided on the division of the income deriving from the marketing of the competition. This will be based on a bonus system in which the clubs that advance to the latter stages of the FIBA Europe League will receive a larger share.
  • It was decided that the 2-referee system will be used for this season and as of next season, the 3-referee system will be instituted in all FIBA Europe competitions.
  • The Final Four of the FIBA Europe League will be held in the city of one of the participating clubs. The bidding process will be opened to the 16 clubs that qualify for the eighth-final play-offs.
  • FIBA Europe will work closely with all FIBA Europe League participants for the duration of the season. For that purpose, Mr. Alexander Volkov (UKR - member of the FIBA Europe Board), Mr. Peter Klingbiel (GER - member of the FIBA Europe Board), Mr. Jose Montero (ESP - member of the FIBA Europe Competitions Commission), Mr. Predrag Bogosavljev (YUG - member of the FIBA Europe Competitions Commission) and Mr. Algimantas Pavilonis (LTU - member of the FIBA Europe Competitions Commission) will visit the clubs during the season to assist them with all FIBA Europe League competition issues.
  • Mr. Walter Kaszelik (AUT - member of the FIBA Europe Board) will serve as the FIBA Europe League Security Advisor.

The FIBA Europe League Council was nominated:

  • Mr. Nar Zanolin, Executive Director of FIBA Europe will act as President
  • Mr. Alexander Volkov, FIBA Europe representative
  • Mr. Peter Klingbiel, FIBA Europe representative.
  • Mr. Nikos Zelomossidi, PAOK Thessaloniki - Greece
  • Mr. Rany Kahana, Hapoel Tel Aviv - Israel
  • Mr. Arkadiusz Krygier, Anwil Wloclawek - Poland
  • Mr. Yevgeny Gomelski, Dynamo Moscow - Russia
  • Mr. Mika Sohlberg, Honka Playboys - Finland

"The FIBA Europe League is a brand new competition," said FIBA Europe Executive Director Nar Zanolin. "We very much want this to be a success and after meeting with the clubs and witnessing their enthusiasm and willingness to work together, we are confident that it will be so."

FIBA EuroLeague Women

The General Assembly of the FIBA EuroLeague Women meeting was also held today with the presence of all 16 participating clubs. The Draw for this competition will be held tomorrow, Saturday 19th July 2003 at 12:00.

The General Assembly decided on the following issues:

  • All participating clubs agreed to maintain the existing Competition Regulations.
  • The Assembly also agreed to co-operate closely on all marketing and promotional aspects of the FIBA EuroLeague Women including the creation of an All-Star Promotional Team.
  • All participating clubs agreed to the distribution of the income derived from the marketing of the League.

The FIBA EuroLeague Women Council was nominated:

  • Mr. Nar Zanolin, FIBA Europe Executive Director will act as President
  • Mr. Ivan Bodvogvary, FIBA Europe Representative
  • Mr. Francis Decourriere, US Valenciennes Olympic - France
  • Mr. Iszuk Andrej, Samara - Russia
  • Mr. Francesc Mumbru, Barcelona - Spain
  • Mr. Arvydas Tamasaukas, Lietuvos Telekomas - Lithuania as an alternate member

FIBA Europe Competitions Commission

The day of meetings concluded with the FIBA Europe Executive Committee and Competitions Commission. Due to the sad passing of Competitions Commission President Mr. Dan Kesten (ISR), the Commission elected a new President, Mr. Sergey Chernov (RUS). Mr. Peter Klingbiel (GER) was unanimously appointed to the Commission as Mr. Chernov's successor.

"This meeting was held under extremely sad circumstances," said FIBA Europe President Mr. George Vassilakopoulos. "It will be tough to replace Dan Kesten in our Commission, and his passing is a great loss to the FIBA Europe family."
