BC Sumykhimprom are staking a claim as the hottest side in the Ukrainian Superleague as the post season approaches.
The side from Sumy defeated FIBA Europe League final four side BC Kyiv last Tuesday101-95. They followed that up at the weekend with a sensational 94-102 win over league leaders Azovmash Mariupol.
200 cm guard Igor Kryvych did most of the damage for Sumykhimprom, tallying 31 points and 8 rebounds in the win,
BC Kyiv, meanwhile, failed to capitalise on Azovmash's defeat. A victory against Khimik Yuzhniy would have given Kyiv joint first place with Azovmash, but Khimik easily handled Kyiv, 100-81.
The two teams faced each other two weeks ago and after a 70-75 loss, Yuzhniy’s head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic said that Khimik would only be able to compete with teams like BC Kyiv by adding an outside threat.
The signing of Gerald Fitch was designed to fill that void, and it worked to perfection against Kyiv. Fitch recorded 29 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals for Fitch and Serhiy Lishuk added 24 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Azovmash remain top of the standings with a 23-3 record. Kyiv remain in second place (22-4), Khimik in third (21-5) and Sumykhimprom in fourth (16-10).
